Chapter 16

“Now calm down. No need to get all worked up. I just asked a simple question.” Babs had enough presence of mind to know it was in her best interest to back away.

Granny stood in her face. “You don’t get to tell me what to do. I never let that fly when we were kids. I sure as sugar do not intend to let you do it now. I suggest you get yourself out of my store before I do something you’ll regret for the rest of your life.”

I tried to force my way into the office, but Eunice and Jake planted their feet in the doorway to see the show up close and personal. “Get out of the way.” I pushed, pulled and tugged, but neither would budge.

Jake elbowed me to move away. “It’s not over yet.” She gave me play by play. “Lola is on fire. Uh oh, Babs looks mad. She’s … Nope, she didn’t. Good for her because I doubt it would have ended well.”

I grabbed her by her ponytail and pulled as hard as I could.

“Ouch! What’s wrong with you?” She rubbed the tender spot on the back of her head.

“Move out of the way,” I ordered. I pushed through and forced my way in between them. “Stop this. Your grandmothers for goodness sake. You can’t do this.” I cocked an eyebrow up at Granny. She was covered in sweat. “Enough.” I turned to Babs, who despite the tears in her eyes, looked battle ready. Her fists were balled up, her chest held high, her knees bent as if to steady herself in case Granny swung at her. “Look at you. Do you see what you’ve done? You look like a fighter in a boxing ring.”

She was breathless. “I’ve tried. I’ve given my heart and soul to keep the peace, but I’ve had it. I can’t do it anymore.” She pointed her finger at Granny. “You’re not right. You’re like a schoolyard bully who never grew up. Do you want to know something? When I saw the note, I didn’t want to believe it was you. Yes, you’re eccentric and mean, but no way did I think you were capable of something so awful. After this, I can see I was wrong. You are demented. That’s why you don’t have any friends left. You’re a mean, bitter, old hag.”

I didn’t have to turn around to know those words didn’t sit well with Granny. She could handle a lot of things, but insults about her age were guaranteed to make her lash out. There was nothing I could do but push Babs out the door before Granny physically attacked her.

“Help me get her out of here,” I ordered Jake and Eunice as I forced the door shut. “Hurry. I won’t be able to keep her in here for long.”
